Bon Echo is like no other place on earth. Situated near Cloyne, Ontario this crown jewel of the Ontario Park system has a rich history which is being recorded on digital film over the next several years by Ken and Cathy Hook of 45 Degrees Latitude. Bon Echo is home to the famous Rock on Mazinaw Lake- a towering cliff rising 300' out of the Lake with another 300' of rock face below the water. Mazinaw Lake is one of the deepest inland lakes in Ontario with a depth of 475 feet. It is also home to Canada's largest collection of accessible aboriginal pictographs (295) on the Rock face. These were likely painted by the Ojibwa over 400 years ago. The majestic Bon Echo Inn was built facing the Rock in 1899 by Dr. Weston Price. The Inn was operated as a destination inn by Canadian and American well-to-do tourists and offered unrivalled services in the wilderness. Many notables and artists visited the Inn over its life span under the ownership of Dr. Price and then Flora MacDonald Denison- and later her son Merrill. Many of the Group of Seven painted the beauty of Bon Echo which can be seen in many collections today- both public and private. Tragically the Inn was destroyed by fire in 1936 due to a lightning strike. The documentary will be filmed in high definition and will consist of historical photographs, interviews with historians, vintage films and current footage. The focus will be why and how the Bon Echo area was developed and the hardships encountered by man in this rugged part of Ontario. If you have historical photos, documents or art which would help "tell the story" we would be pleased to hear from you. Photos are carefully scanned then digitally restored as necessary. Contributors will receive restored digital images with their originals and full credit in the film. Please help us tell an accurate story of this incredible area! Ken and Cathy Hook
